Earlier this month the Nance County Sheriffs department increased the number of deputies on the road in order participate in a national campaign called, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

One person is killed on average every 39 minutes in the United States as a result of drunk driving. During the Christmas and New Years holidays there is often an increase in drunk driving related accidents and deaths. As a result, from Dec. 15 to Jan. 1, 2024 the Nance County Sheriff’s Department will have extra deputies on patrol focusing on traffic enforcement and impaired drivers.

The national campaign also aims to spread awareness and educate the public about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving.

Chief Deputy Eric Griffin of the Nance County Sheriff’s Department is helping with the campaign.

“Alcohol has played a role in the majority of the injury and fatality accidents in our county over the last year,” he said. “We hope that the increased traffic enforcement will make people think twice before they decide to get behind the wheel after drinking.”

For more information on the campaign or information about the effects of alcohol on the body, see the National Highway Safety Administration’s website, nhtsa.gov.
